On-the-air candidate night
Mark your calendars and plan to be there for what might be the first event of its kind in the country. What is it? Read on!
On Monday, October 17, from 9:00-11:00 pm, Stonewall Cleveland will be co-sponsoring a candidates night with Buck Harris, the nationally-known radio talk show host of The Gay 90's, on WHK 1420 AM. A live audience (that's you!) will gather at the Pilgrim Congregational Church at West 14th Street and Starkweather Avenue. Be there by 8:45. Parking is

dates for the offices listed above. Each candidate that attends or sends a representative will have the chance to tell you where he or she stands on various issues and why she or he deserves your vote. For those of you who feel generally under-educated about the political races that we face in the fall, this is a golden opportunity to learn more about those people

to the church, and a map accompanies the ad also found in the Chronicle. Buck will broadcast live from the church sanctuary and take calls from radio listeners.
So, what's so special about this event? I'll tell you.
Stonewall Cleveland has invited candidates for the offices of governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, the Senate and the House of Representatives to appear live in Cleveland. For those representatives in Washington we've arranged for a telephone tie-in. Each candidate will be invited to speak for a few minutes, then will be available to field questions from audience members and callers (the telephone number is 578-1420).
This may sound like a pretty standard event. After all, Stonewall Akron had its candidate nights over the last two months and had a huge success with them. The difference is the broadcast aspect. Buck Harris is nationally recognized for his talk show and for many "firsts" in gay-lesbian-bisexual broadcasting. As far as we know, this will be the first on the air gaylesbian-bisexual candidates night; we expect national attention.
And what's in it for you? A lot, I think. First of all, you'll get the names of all of the candi-
who are asking you to elect them to represent you in Columbus and in Washington, D.C.
We sent an initial survey to each of the candidates to give them
a general idea of what kinds of issues specifically concern us. From there it's up to those of you who attend and call in. It's a chance to see how each candidate plans to deal with the problems that we know await our elected officials in the near future. Whether your concerns are crime, health care reform, the economy or those issues more particular to the gay, lesbian, and bisexual community (e.g. domestic partnerships, a federal civil rights bill, etc.), here is the chance to learn more about each candidate.
Of course some candidates will tell us that they aren't interested in attending, and others will say yes and then not show. There's something to be gained even from that level of participation. What does it say to us, as a community, if a candidate says "it's not important enough for me to even send a representative to your candidates night." I think it says a lot.
We hope to see many of you there! On behalf of Stonewall Cleveland, I'd like to thank all of the people who have worked so hard to put togethert er this candidate night. Thanks to Buck Harris for his support and help. And, as always, thanks for reading this far.
A road trip with friendly folks

The Ohio caucus of Christian Coalition members, at the September 16-18 "Road to Victory" conference in Washington, D.C., have decided to help us celebrate October 11, National Coming Out Day. They are marching on the Statehouse in Columbus. The Coalition wants to come out to draw attention to the perils of "self-esteem" programs and "commu-

nity values building" curricula, now called Outcome-Based Education or OBE. It offends their "family values" to have Boards of Education presume these are needed in today's world.
Ohio Parents' and Professionals' Commission of North Olmsted is planning the statewide march. For $12.00 prepaid registration (call Penny Sisson, 216-779-5684 or Bev Schultz, 216-777-8932), you can bus down and back with the wholesome hoard of Coalition marchers. March T-shirts are available, or you could wear your "I Can't Even March Straight" number, since it is National Coming Out Day, and the bus will be filled with Christian love, of course.
As the Christian Coalition seeks to help us celebrate National Coming Out Day, we would love to help them out! The following partial list of radical right wing leaders and organizers in Ohio are provided courtesy of Institute for First Amendment Studies "friends" and the Roundtable, the statewide affiliates of Focus on the Family-"not friends."
Focus on the Family is a key right wing organization; certainly the most heavilyfunded and most clearly discriminating right wing group in America.
If you wish to do "opposition research" work by joining any of these folks and keeping us advised of their plans, this community will owe you its deep, lifelong gratitude. That is the truth. Wear blue.
